San Ángel is located on the west side of Mexico City. It has a population of over 100,000 people and is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. The name San Ángel comes from a 16th century monastery built by Spaniards dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. The monastery was destroyed by an earthquake in 1754 but the name stuck.
San Ángel is home to many landmarks including Plaza de los Martires (Plaza of Martyrs), Plaza Hidalgo (Hidalgo Square) and Plaza de la Constitucion (Constitution Square). These three squares are considered sacred sites because they all contain monuments commemorating Mexican independence from Spain in 1821. Plaza de los Martires contains a monument called “El Angel Caido” (Fallen Angel), which depicts an angel falling from heaven into flames below due to his failure to protect Mexico City against invaders during a battle between Spanish conquistadores
