The National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología) in Mexico City contains the world’s largest collection of ancient Mexican art and also has ethnographic exhibits about Mexico’s present-day indigenous groups.
Highlights:
* The Sun Stone or Aztec Calendar: This huge stone disk depicts the sun god Tonatiuh, who is holding a human heart in each hand. The calendar was created by the Aztecs, who ruled Mexico from the 14th to 16th centuries A.D.
* Recreation of Pakal’s tomb in Maya exhibit room: This is a recreation of one of the tombs found at Palenque in Chiapas state. It contains murals depicting scenes from Maya life.
* Jade mask of the Zapotec Bat God: In this exhibit room a jade mask representing an ancient Zapotec deity has been placed on display.
