A species of baleen whale, humpback whales can range in length from 12 to 16 m long and weigh up to 36, 000 kg. In particular, humpback whales are known for breaching and other distinctive surface behaviors, making it a very popular for whale watching. It is the predominant species that we see here in Puerto Vallarta between the months of October and March.
Humpback whales will migrate up to 25,000 km each year. Some from the polar waters in northern Canada all the way to the tropical waters here in Puerto Vallarta to have their young, breed and fast, living off fat reserves. It is not uncommon to walk down the Malecon on a sunny day, look out into the Bay of Banderas and see a humpback breaching, you might even be lucky enough to see a baby humpback.
Estigo Tours Puerto Vallarta’s Coast and Jungle Tour follows the Bay of Banderas south towards Boca de Tomatlan. There have been many of instances where our clients and tour guides are riding along on their ATV adventure and spot the majestic humpbacks surfacing and putting on a show.
